Since you’re reading this it’s clear that you want to eat healthier.
Then why don’t you?
Is it because healthy food tastes like crap and junk food tastes awesome?
Wouldn’t it be nice if it could be the other way around?
If only you could make healthy food taste amazing to the point that you craved it.
If only you didn’t want to eat junk food because it made you feel sick and unhealthy.
This is possible for you. You can kick the junk food cravings once and for all, and eat a diet that will allow you to have the body of your dreams.
Kicking the Addiction
When you think with your taste buds you are going to choose the high-fat, high-sugar food over what is healthy for you every single time. You know this, I know this, food companies know this. In fact, food companies know exactly what flavouring agents to put into their foods to get you hooked. You may literally be addicted to their food products and not be aware of it.
The first thing you must do is throw out the junk food, and surround yourself with healthy food. It may be hard to say goodbye to that bag of cookies you find yourself reaching for when you get home from work, but you won’t miss them for long. Once you begin eating only healthy foods on a consistent basis you will retrain your taste buds, and junk food won’t have the same effect on you that it once did. In fact, you may actually get headaches, digestive discomfort, or feel tired after eating them. With consistency you will actually crave healthy food and begin to see and feel the benefits of eating healthy.
Of course, you will need to exert some willpower at the beginning, because the temptation of the unhealthy foods will still be there, and the benefits of eating healthy will be mostly unnoticed. But if you can be disciplined for just a couple weeks you will know how much better you can feel after eating healthy.
It’s a Lifestyle
If you are looking to lose a few pounds over the next couple months there are countless of diets that may or may not work. I am sure you have heard it before, eating healthy is a lifestyle. If you want to make a sustainable positive change in the trajectory of your current health situation then you must make changes in your lifestyle.
One critical lifestyle change is taking time to prepare food. Healthy foods can take a little extra time to prepare and as a result we opt for unhealthy foods out of convenience. It’s easy to pick up some fast-food on the go, or throw a frozen pizza in the oven. This has caused many people (especially younger generations) to lack basic cooking skills. If you lack cooking skills take a class, go on YouTube, or just start cooking. Like any skill, you will only develop it with repetition. Also, many butchers and delis offer “homemade” healthy take home meals, so if you simply cannot or refuse to cook, this might be an option for you.
Eat Your Veggies!
Making the change to eating a healthy diet is also be a challenge for people who do not like fruits and vegetables. I don’t have a magic pill for these type of folks, however I have a few suggestions:
- If you don’t like certain fruits or vegetables that’s okay, but try them again anyway, they won’t kill you. I remember disliking many fruits and vegetables when I was young but now I crave them. I think this may also be due to retraining my tastebuds and having the mindset of eating for nutrients rather than strictly pleasure.
- Buy organic produce. Organically grown fruits are generally sweeter and the vegetables are more flavourful and less bitter. They are also free of pesticides and fungicides which will lighten the chemical load on your body, and aid detoxification.
- Try at least one new fruit, vegetable, or healthy recipe each week. This will broaden your spectrum of food choices, meal selections, and cooking skills. The worst that will happen is that you realize you don’t like a certain food.
- At our home we use a organic produce delivery company called Organics Live. We get fresh organic fruits and vegetables delivered to our door at a cheaper price than the grocery store! This has allowed us to enjoy new foods and try new recipes with the produce we receive, and it saves us time on our busy lives.
